Winterland
The Winterland project is an opportunity to engage community and encourage residents and visitors to safely explore art pieces at window locations throughout downtown, the Central Eastside, and Old Town.
Local artist Mike Bennett has teamed with young, local BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) artists to repurpose plywood that had been installed over the windows of downtown businesses, transforming it into a menagerie of colorful winter themed art pieces.
Each day between December 1-26, we’ll post a clue on this page about the window location of a new Winterland art piece. Residents and visitors to Portland are encouraged to safely explore the central city, searching for Wonderland art – and supporting small businesses along the way!
When you spot one of the daily art pieces, post it to Instagram with the tag #winterlandpdx. Follow along virtually through Instagram @winterlandpdx.
On December 25, look out for a collaborative Winterland piece featuring all of the artists. On December 26 the final Winterland art piece, created by Mike, will be installed. All 26 pieces will remain on display throughout December. Starting on January 4 the art pieces will be auctioned off with the proceeds split between these nonprofits: Morpheus Youth Project, Brown Hope, Ally PDX/APANO and Native Arts & Cultures Foundation.
Winterland is a collaborative project produced by Prosper Portland, Portland Business Alliance, Downtown Portland, and Travel Portland. Our collective goal is to promote and inspire folks to shop locally.

About the artist
Mike Bennett moved from Central Pennsylvania to Portland, Oregon in the winter of 2016. He studied Art Education, Computer Design, Illustration and Animation at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and proceeded to chase his dream of illustration and character design immediately after his graduation in 2012. Passionate about the outdoors and lacking a proximity to a community with an appreciation for art, Mike's move to Portland was an incredibly easy choice. With encouragement from friends, family and followers; Mike pursues his dream of being a full-time artist by tackling various illustrative "challenges" and constant creation in his free time. Working alongside children allows Mike to keep in touch with his ever-present inner child, keeping his dreams of being an illustrator alive.

About the artist
Hi! My name is Tamea Mitchell. I was born and raised in Northeast Portland. I've always been a creative and musically inclined person growing up. I started getting into painting at the age of 14 at my old middle school Trinity Lutheran, and I have to give props to my art teacher Ms. Rawls because she inspired me to keep painting and captivating my art. My work so far has been paintings of plus size Black women because as a plus size person I never saw paintings or drawings that looked like me. I decided to make it happen so that other little girls and women who are like me have something they can make a connection with. I am a freshman this year at Oregon State University and I am majoring in Pre-Graphic Design. I also do commission pieces, but all in all, I like to paint and create in general.
