February marks Black History Month

Follow @ProsperPortland and @MercatusPDX on social media to discover ways to celebrate Black History Month and support Black-owned local businesses. First up, the Old Town Community Association, with support from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and Guardian Management presents “To See My Face, To Hear My Voice,” a retail art gallery featuring the work of seven Portland-based African American artists.

Exhibit curator LaToya Lovely, a local educator and formerly a professional dancer, says, “As artists we are always shouting to the world through our canvas, our photography, our dance, our song. Shouting to be heard, and when we finally see our beautiful brown faces illuminated from the tv screen, a billboard, behind a podium, and we hear our voices strong and rich, it is life changing. It is powerful. That is a fragment of what To See My Face, To Hear My Voice is to me.” 

The exhibit and sale will be a pop-up in the OTCA’s unit in the Tuck Lung building at 140 NW Fourth Avenue in Old Town and runs from Thursday, February 4 through Sunday, February 28.  Hours will be Thursdays from 2-7 pm, Fridays from 2-7 pm, Saturdays from 12 pm to 5 pm, and Sunday February 28 for a final showing from 12 pm to 5 pm.
