The second volume of Mercatus Magazine, a collection of stories about BIPOC-owned businesses, came out amid the struggles of the pandemic last spring. A team of 30 creatives - photographers, stylists, writers, poets, chefs, farmers, and activists – worked with Prosper Portland staff to put this second edition together.

Editor Emmeline Eao says, “While thinking of this issue’s theme of 'Sustaining Greatness,' I was pulled to the inherent way entrepreneurs of color give back to the community, and the fact that so many BIPoC-owned businesses choose to share the resources and abundance they work for to support and uplift others on a daily basis. This legacy of care is fundamental to Brown and Black communities in business and in life, and it’s what sets us apart from dominant culture economics.”

These stories are more relevant than ever, as people of color continue to face the disparate effects of the public health and economic crises triggered by the pandemic. Hard copies of Mercatus Magazine are still available to order, either individually or as a bulk order for retailers and other organizations that are interested in having the publication stocked in bricks-and-mortar locations.
